Dr. Maria L. Boccia has been appointed Professor of Pastoral Counseling and Psychology and Director of Graduate Programs in Counseling at the Charlotte campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She will begin teaching full-time in January 2008.
Dr. Boccia taught research methods in the counseling program at Gordon-Conwell—Charlotte as an adjunct faculty member during the 2007 spring semester. She comes to Gordon-Conwell with 22 years of teaching experience, most recently at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served until 2002 as the director of the observational methods core and taught workshops and seminars for faculty, postdoctorate and graduate students, and other staff.
Dr. Boccia’s most recent work has been as a therapist at the Center for Psychological and Family Services and as a fellow and scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, a position she has held since 1993. The Institute is located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the recipient of more than 15 grants for psychological research, has received more than 10 awards and honors for her work both as a scientist and as a teacher, and is a member of 10 professional organizations. Dr. Boccia has also conducted research on psychological topics and has published more than 80 articles in recognized journals.
Dr. Boccia is a licensed counselor and marriage and family therapist in North
Carolina as well as a licensed sex therapist with the American Society of Sexuality
Educators, Counselors and Therapists and with the American Board of Christian Sex
Therapists.
Dr. Boccia holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of Massachusetts, completed
post-doctoral work in developmental psychology at the University of Denver, and
holds a D. Min. in marriage and family counseling from Gordon-Conwell.
