Gordon-Conwell to Host National Preaching Conference

South Hamilton, MA–Six well-known master preachers from the U.S. and Canada will be keynote speakers September 5 and 6, at the inaugural conference of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s new Center for Preaching.

“Preaching in the Wilderness: Crying for a Voice,” an event attracting participants from across the U.S. and Canada, will feature plenary sessions, workshops led by Gordon-Conwell faculty, worship services and conversations about preaching. In conjunction with the conference, a free one-man play, Genesis, by Broadway actor Max McLean, will be presented in the seminary chapel at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, September 7, and is open to the public.

Members of the preaching panel include:

  • Dr. Tony Evans, Senior Pastor of the 5,000-member Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, Dallas, Texas, and host of the daily radio show The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans heard daily on 500 U.S. radio stations and in more than 40 countries.
  • Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., Gordon-Conwell President, Colman M. Mockler Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, and popular Bible preacher and teacher at churches and conferences throughout the U.S. and abroad.
  • Dr. John C. Ortberg, Jr., Teaching Pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, Illinois. With an attendance of 17,000, Willow Creek is one of America’s largest churches.
  • Dr. Haddon W. Robinson, Gordon-Conwell’s Harold John Ockenga Distinguished Professor of Preaching. Dr.Robinson has been named one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world.
  • Rev. Ken Shigematsu, Senior Pastor of Tenth Avenue Alliance Church in Vancouver, British Columbia, and a frequent plenary speaker at seminaries and conference in Canada and the U.S.
  • Dr. Joseph M. Stowell, President of the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, and radio broadcaster heard daily on Moody’s Proclaim! and weekly Moody Presents.


Preaching conference sessions will be held in the chapel and adjacent classrooms located in the Academic Center on the Gordon-Conwell campus, 130 Essex Street, in South Hamilton, MA.

The new Center for Preaching will conduct conferences and workshops on preaching, overseas training programs, continuing education classes and research. It also provides sermon evaluations and PulpitTalk, an audio journal by the Gordon-Conwell preaching faculty. Gordon-Conwell offers graduate homiletics courses, and Th.M. and doctoral degrees in preaching.

According to Dr. Haddon W. Robinson, “No pastor that I know has ever determined to be boring. Yet, we do it without trying. All of us want to put together biblical sermons that are clear and relevant to our listeners. To do it regularly, we need all the help we can get. Through Gordon-Conwell’s Center for Preaching, we offer tools to help preachers communicate more effectively.”
