About Fresco

Fresco is derived from an Italian word meaning "fresh," and refers to the technique of painting background pigment directly onto fresh damp plaster. As the plaster dries, a layer of calcium carbonate crystals is formed that reflects light, creating a soft, luminous glow. The use of fresco predates the birth of Christ. Few artists today have mastered this most demanding art form.

About the Artist

North Carolina artist Gerald Steinmeyer, a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and a Fogel Scholarship recipient, also studied the art of fresco in Italy. An exhibition of his fresco studies was recently shown at the Lincoln Center in New York.

Mr. Steinmeyer currently has images posted on his website detailing the progress and development of fresco. These include conceptual sketches as well as information on the actual process of creating the fresco.

Associate artist Shay Lombardo is a member of the National Society of Women in the Arts and has assisted Steinmeyer on fresco projects since 1991.
